Apple’s Privacy Labels Coming To All Apps

Apple recently announced the need for new app privacy labels for all apps on the App Store that developers and companies have to ensure to exist. These privacy labels mention exactly what data these apps are collecting from users and how.

WhatsApp criticised these new privacy labels and said that it was unfair since these privacy labels did not seem to apply to Apple’s own apps that come pre-installed with iOS.

Apple has responded to this by stating that there will be privacy disclosures for its own apps as well.

Whatsapp’s Criticism

WhatsApp is not happy with Apple. The reason happens to be Apple’s updated App Store privacy policy.  This policy will require apps to show a ‘privacy nutrition’ label that will display the data being collected.

WhatsApp’s argument is Apple’s new policy is not being consistently applied.

In a statement issued, a WhatsApp spokesperson said, “We think labels should be consistent across first and third-party apps as well as reflect the strong measures apps may take to protect people’s private information.

Why Apple’s Privacy labels for App store?

Apple first introduced the privacy labels as part of its WWDC announcements earlier this year.

The labels likened to nutrition facts found on food products will appear in the App Store. This will give users easy, glanceable breakdowns of the data that developers can collect and track.

The submissions for labels of apps have begun starting December 8th for all developers.

Apple has clarified that its mandatory app privacy “nutrition labels” program will apply to all apps. This is whether they’re from third-party developers, or Apple’s own
