- Google gradually transitioned Play Music users over to YouTube Music
- Users will be able to download data using Google Takeaway
- YouTube Music is offering new features to entice its new users
Google has slowly been moving its music streaming service from Google Play Music to YouTube Music. The company began shutting down its legacy streaming platform back in October. As of today, Google Music is officially dead for all users around the world.
If you visit music.google.com or the Android and iOS app, you will be redirected to a blank page reading ‘Google Play Music is no longer available.’ For users stuck with the dead app, an option to ‘transfer your account and library, including playlists and uploads’ to YouTube Music.
Within the app, a ‘Manage your Music’ section will allow users to download data using Google Takeout. However, this feature will only be available until later this month. It shows options like ‘download your music library,’ ‘delete your recommendation history,’ and ‘delete your music library.’
Google Play Music’s end
The initial procedure to end Google Play Music began in May when the company allowed Play Music users to shift to YouTube Music. It also offered a new transfer tool that brought all uploaded content, playlists, and additional content recommendations to YT Music. Over the span of coming months, Google began a worldwide shutdown of the Play Music store. It removed the ability to buy and download new songs. Later on, the streaming service became unavailable on Google’s Assistant speakers and Smart Displays.
Google is now totally focusing on YouTube Music. It specified the deadline to make the transition to the new app by the end of this month. Users can also download their uploaded data as, by the next year, all the library information will be gone.
Meanwhile, YouTube Music is adding new features with continuous updates being rolled out. Recently, YT Music added a Quick Picks carousel which generates a playlist based on your taste. When you select a song, a radio playlist of similar songs will be created automatically. The Home Feed carousel shows 20 songs you’ve played recently. The Quick Picks section is placed below the ‘Your Favourites’ and ‘Mixed for you’ sections.
