What is Google Ads?

Google Ads (previously Google AdWords) is a Google-developed online advertising platform that allows marketers to bid on the right to display short commercials, service offerings, product listings, or videos to web visitors. It can advertise on non-search websites, mobile applications, videos, and in the results of search engines such as Google Search (the Google Search Network). Pay-per-click (PPC) pricing is used to provide services.

Google Ads is Alphabet Inc’s primary source of income, accounting for US$168.6 billion in 2020. Google Ads produced US$257.6 billion in revenue in 2021.

Google AdWords was started in 2000. Initially, marketers for AdWords paid a monthly fee, and Google set up and managed their campaigns. Google quickly launched the AdWords self-service interface to assist small firms and people that desired to run their ads. Google launched a campaign management program called ‘Jumpstart’ in 2005.

Initially, the AdWords system was built on top of the MySQL database engine. After the system was released, management decided to switch to Oracle but was finally forced back to MySQL due to the system becoming significantly slower. Eventually, Google created a unique distributed Relational database management system (RDBMS) called Google F1 that was designed exclusively for the Ad business’s needs. The interface allows for the editing of spreadsheets, generating search query reports, and tracking conversion metrics.
