Interview with Rico Rauch : Fortnight Studio

Fortnight Studio UK

We reached out to Rico Rauch, who is the Founder of app development company Fortnight Studio for a short interview to understand what makes them leading app developers from UK.

Tell us something about your company:

We are a purposefully-small team of creative thinkers and makers. We help turbocharge growing startups and with a strong team of designers, developers, and product experts we can look after all aspects of digital products…we like to think of ourselves as a ‘swiss army knife’ for digital product teams.

It’s important to us that we treat every client like a partnership and try to become a real extension of their in-house teams. By including them as product owners throughout the project lifecycle, the outcome can be pretty spectacular.

What are your company’s specializations?

We started as a design first agency and still approach every project in that way – understanding the client, their audience, and how we can improve their offering through ingenious design. As we grew and acquired a host of amazing clients we added to our specialities and now focus mostly on mobile apps, as well as general UI / UX and branding.

Who are some of your major customers?

We are really proud to have partnered with Bumble, Porsche, OnePlus, Simba Sleep, Mindful Chef, and many other amazing brands.

Top 5 apps that you have developed?

Simba Sleep, Bear, Bikemap, Bumble, Mindful Chef

What is your average cost of mobile app development?

We have worked with all different types of clients and budgets, from new founders to Enterprise level so we look to try everything we can to work with the budget available, offering a variety of solutions to suit them.

We love to work with first time founders and always work iteratively and lean to make small budgets go a long way. We focus on the core idea, how we can make it a success through launching a functional first version. This allows for user testing with live users, as well as opportunities to showcase the product to potential investors.

So there isn’t really a one size fits all approach to budgeting, but in most cases, the client will need a budget upwards of £25,000 for a good, scalable first version of a mobile app.

Provide a list of your 5 domain specializations.

We work with startups and SMEs from a variety of domains & backgrounds, so we are always focused on building a relationship with the client first to identify opportunities within their business and to solve problems for their customers, regardless of the industry.

Over the years we have become experts in designing and building mobile apps across many different industries, but a lot of our work has been in the health & fitness, proptech, fintech, dating and music sectors.

What cross-platform technologies and tools do you use?

It depends on the project but our go-to cross-platform language for mobile apps is React Native.

Do you develop mobile apps with native or hybrid?

Both. Depending on what the client needs to build a successful app, we’ll recommend if native or hybrid is the best approach.

What is the app development process that you follow?

We approach development through agile practices to ensure we focus on client communication, task planning, live and retrospective feedback, budget management and being adaptive to the clients needs.

We follow a flow of Research & Analysis, Feature Definition, Wireframing, High Fidelity Design, Prototyping, Front & Back End Development, QA, Launch and Support.

What is the latest technology/product you are working on?

We’re working on an app that aims to level the playing field for artists around the world, transforming the way they promote their music driven by data.

Do you work on technologies like IoT, Blockchain or Artificial Intelligence?

Yes, we work with IoT devices quite a bit, especially with health & fitness clients through smart watches and other workout equipment. Blockchain excites us and we are currently working with a few clients to build NFT marketplaces and incorporating crypto wallets.

Are you looking for customers in a particular industry or domain? Please mention just one industry.

We’ll have a call with anyone who’s serious about building an app, so we aren’t restricted to one particular industry. If we had to choose an industry we excel at it would be the health & fitness sector.

Where do you see your company in the next 5 years?

We’d like to further strengthen the partnership we have with our existing clients and become the go-to team for new clients who are passionate and ambitious about solving their customer’s needs through ingenious design and a product-first approach.
