The latest update to Luna Monitor adds a useful new feature: the ability to connect a Windows PC to a Mac laptop or desktop (including Apple’s flash M1 iMacs) for use as a secondary display. The latest update supports 4K and 5K resolutions (provided you have a screen capable of helping them).

While Luna Display has long supported Mac-to-Mac communication, users were previously limited to connecting PCs to iPads via the company’s proprietary dongle and software configuration. Like the Mac-to-Mac connection, the new PC-to-Mac link works wirelessly via an ethernet connection.

Additionally, Luna Display’s upgrade provides support for 5K and 4K monitors at native resolutions, albeit there are some limitations: 5K is only supported at 30Hz on PCs, but up to 45Hz for Macs running macOS Big Sur. On the other hand, both platforms will support 4K resolution at up to 60Hz. Nevertheless, when combined with the addition of PC support, Luna Display’s upgrade provides a near-perfect option for the secondary display of an M1 iMac.

The latest update follows Luna Display’s support for PC-to-iPad installations earlier this year. Earlier this year, Luna Display cost $129 for Mac or PC, with dongle options including USB-C, HDMI, or Mini DisplayPort, depending on your platform of choice.

What does Luna Display’s Office Mode entail?

Office mode is a feature of Luna Display designed for users who frequently work in an environment where numerous individuals use the application. Luna Display will no longer automatically connect to the first computer it discovers on the network when Office Mode is activated.

Rather than that, it would help if you used Wi-Fi Manual Connect, USB in Computer-to-iPad mode, or Ethernet or Thunderbolt in Computer-to-Mac mode. Once you’ve connected via Wi-Fi Manual Connect, the information is stored on the device, and the device will reconnect automatically during the next session.

How can I turn on Office Mode?

Because this is not a default function, you must enable Office Mode explicitly in the Luna Preferences Menu.

Click Luna Display > Preferences > Connectivity tab in the top menu bar of your Primary device. Select “Office” from the Wi-Fi Connection Mode drop-down menu.

Tap the Wi-Fi sign in the Luna iPad app in the upper left corner. Select Office from the drop-down menu.

Click Luna Secondary > Preferences in the top left corner of the Luna Secondary App. Select “Office” from the Wi-Fi Connection Mode drop-down menu.

How to maintain the connection?

This upgrade requires both the primary and secondary Luna apps to be updated.
