- YouTube Music features a Year in Review playlist for the year 2020
- Spotify is offering Wrapped 2020 with charts and stats
- YouTube Music will add functionality to share stories
YouTube Music has been actively pumping out several new features and updates recently. It is competing directly with the likes of Spotify Apple Music+ and Amazon Music. The music streaming platform is now adding a ‘2020 Year in Review’ playlist. It is a compilation of the songs you have listened to the most this year. This addition is a direct take on its competitors offering similar playlists.
Spotify offers the annual recap of songs and podcasts in its Spotify Wrapped playlist. Apple Music is offering a similar playlist called Apple Music Replay. For YouTube Music users, ‘My 2020 Year in Review’ can be found under a ‘Songs of the Year’ carousel present on the main Home Feed.
The playlist shows a preview of artists included as well. Moreover, users will be able to save their playlists to the library. These personalized playlists can be downloaded and taken offline. But, users can only use it for offline playback and not be able to share it.
YT Music’s Competition
YouTube Music’s main competitor is Spotify. The music streaming platform offers quizzes, badges, and personalized playlists. The Spotify Wrapped for 2020 includes insights on the artists, songs, genres, and podcasts that got you through this year. The app creates these charts from data unique to each and every listener.
When compared to Spotify Wrapped, YT Music offers quite basic stuff. It lacks the richness of charts and stats, or the ability to share fun graphics on Instagram and Snapchat. However, this feature is under development and has been spotted in a beta build.
Apple Music Replay allows Apple Music subscribers to see their most listened to songs, genres, albums, and artists of the year. The major difference between Apple Music Replay and Spotify Wrapped is that the former is available and updated year-round.
The update was confirmed by Google and is expected to roll out to all users. The Home feed also features a ‘Top Songs of 2020.’ It includes all major hits of the year combined from genres like Jazz, Viral Songs, Gospel, Pop, Adult Alternative, Indie, etc.
In toto, YouTube Music’s ‘Year in Review’ is still an improvement as compared to nothing in the previous year. This move promises that the YT Music team will continue to iterate moving ahead.
