- Edison Mail App gets an update for iOS 14
- The app can be set as the default email app for iOS 14
- It features a personal assistant to organize mails
Apple released iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 on 16 September 2020. It introduces a bunch of new features, including the ability to change your default browser and default email apps.
This introduces flexibility in the Apple ecosystem as opposed to the existing predefined default apps. It allows users to change the email or browser defaults to third-party services like Gmail or Chrome. Only a selected few are available currently, but the options are slowly building up.
What’s new in the latest Edison app?
Edison Mail is the latest email app to add support for iOS 14 as a default mail app. In its version 1.21.17 being rolled out on the App Store, Edison is making the said change.
Edison supports accounts from most domains. These domains include Outlook, Yahoo, Hotmail, iCloud, Microsoft 365, AOL, Gmail, and IMAP accounts.
Edison mail also features a personal assistant. It effortlessly and automatically organizes important travel, receipts, entertainment, and other items.
As the email often has sensitive information, Apple wants developers to “meet specific functional criteria with the aim to ensure private and accurate access for users”. This means that developers will have to update their apps and meet Apple’s requirements.
To change your default mail app to one of the alternatives, follow the given steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Head over to the specific email app you wish to set as your default.
- Tap on the “Default Mail App”.
- Tap on the app of choice to set as default.
Regardless of the app, all available email options will be accessible from the app’s settings. iOS, in the 14.0.1 update addressed a glitch that resets the default apps.

To be a default browser app in iOS, developers need to update their apps. The browsers will use WebKit as an underlying browsing engine. This means they render pages similarly, only differentiated by their user interfaces and syncing with other platforms.
