- Alphabet Employees had formed a union.
- Union currently has 226 members and counting.
- The union is against Google’s certain policies and decisions.
Employees from the parent company of Google, Alphabet, have revealed that they are unionizing. The Alphabet Workers Union is available to all 120,000-plus employees of the tech giant.
Union against “Evil”
The Communications Workers of America (CWA) is assisting the union. Currently, it has more than 220 members. It is part of the project of CWA’s Coalition to Coordinate Digital Employees, and the employees will be CWA Local 1400 members.
The Union includes, according to the union, members paying the fees, an elected board of directors, and paid coordinating workers. And it is open to all workers and contractors under the Alphabet Businesses.
According to program manager Nicki Anselmo in a comment, this union builds on years of brave organization by Google employees. Anselmo claims to see first-hand that Alphabet reacts when they behave collectively. From battling the ‘true names’ scheme to opposing Project Maven to challenging the grotesque, multimillion-dollar payouts that have been provided to executives who have committed sexual assault.
Union will keep Google in check
Anselmo adds that the union will offer a sustainable framework long after the headlines will disappear. The group pointed to Google’s origins in announcing the new union. Claiming the giant started with a ‘Don’t Be Evil’ mantra as a tiny tech corporation. But it has since become one of the world’s most powerful businesses.
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has more than 120,000 employees today. It is responsible for large parts of the internet, monitoring instruments used by billions of individuals around the world, with subsidiaries as diverse as Waymo, Verily, Fitbit, and Wing.
Google executives were awarded millions of dollars in exit packages, following the reports of sexual abuse against fellow Googlers. Meanwhile, half of the employees are employed full-time without job benefits.
Anselmo accused the firm of taking on unethical government contracts, such as military targeting of drones. Even to the Googlers working on such programs, the existence of that technology was also kept secret.
