- Spotify now lets users log in via Google Account
- Spotify is making the transition for the user of Play Music to Spotify easier
- Recently Spotify added live lyrics right after YouTube Music
Why is Spotify supporting Google Accounts?
At the start of August, Google provided an official timeline for shutting down Google Play Music. Google Play Music has now stopped working for many users on Android, iOS, and the web.
Due to Google shutting down Google Play Music, Spotify is making it a bit easier for Google account holders to sign up. You can now use a Google account login to use Spotify.
If you go to sign in to Spotify from an Android phone or tablet, you’ll be able to do so using a Google account. Based on the timing of a recently published support page, it seems like this feature has become widely available as of the last 24 hours.
With a Google account login for Spotify in place of a traditional account, you’ll be able to save yourself from another password. There are no direct benefits to the integration aside from that and a bit of added security, however.
From what we can tell, this feature is live now on Android and the web, but not on the iOS or Windows clients. That’s something to be wary of if you’re planning to take advantage of this new login method.
Another thing worth noting is that you can’t go from a traditional Spotify account to this new Google login option.
‘You can’t currently connect an existing account to Google.
If your Spotify email address is the same as your Google email address, you’re prompted to log in with your email address and password instead. If your Spotify email address is different from your Google email address, you will create a new account if you choose to sign up with Google.’ Quoted in the Spotify support page.
Spotify’s Aim
Spotify is one of the biggest music streaming services on the market today, but it still feels a bit behind the times on certain features. Recently, the company has announced that real-time lyrics are coming to Spotify, but only in select regions.
Spotify was first spotted testing out real-time lyrics last year, but the company remained quiet on a wider rollout. In the time since, competitors such as Apple Music and Google’s new YouTube Music have added the feature, including in the US.
Spotify is borrowing the same placement with its own lyrics feature, showing the lyrics at the bottom of the “Now Playing” screen when a user taps “Lyrics.” The language displayed matches the song itself.
As Spotify is the main Competitor of Google’s YouTube Music. The move to lure customers of the Play Music, which are in search of an alternative, makes total sense and might help Spotify increase its user base.
