- YouTube and its two billion monthly active users crush all the competition.
- Spotify is one of the top destinations for music and other audio content.
- YouTube has a distinct advantage – it is a top destination on the internet
- YouTube is not a music streaming service. The website’s main product is video.
Spotify and Apple Music are probably the first two that come to mind. They might be followed by Pandora, Deezer, and Amazon Prime Music. Even though these all enjoy healthy subscriber bases, none of them is the largest or most popular streaming music service — not by a long shot.
YouTube and its two billion monthly active users crush all the competition in terms of numbers and popularity.
Founded in 2006 and launched in 2008, Spotify has enjoyed critical success around the globe. Home to 60 million tracks, four billion playlists, and 1.9 million podcasts, Spotify is one of the top destinations for music and other audio content.
The popular streaming music service tasted its first real growth when it kicked off in the UK in 2009 and later in the US in 2011. Spotify reached it’s first one million paying subscribers across Europe in March 2011.
Which is the most popular music streaming platform?
Spotify is the world’s biggest music streaming platform by number of subscribers. Users of the service simply need to register to have access to one of the biggest-ever collections of music in history. Plus, this includes podcasts, and other audio content.
It operates on a freemium model. Free Spotify access comes with lower sound quality, and advertisements, and requires an internet connection.
Those who pay for Spotify Premium can listen uninterrupted to high-quality recordings. Premium users are also able to download songs to any device on which they have the Spotify app.
The most used app for listening to music
Both Spotify and YouTube Music offer access to tens of millions of songs. Quality trumps quantity any day of the week. Also, there isn’t a big difference between the two in this area in my experience. All favorite songs and artists are available on both platforms.
Your mileage may vary, though, although likely not by much — especially if the artists users into are relatively popular and well-known.
The biggest difference between the two services in terms of content is that Spotify also gives you access to podcasts, while YouTube Music is focused on music and music videos.
