Despite a global pandemic, 2020 has witnessed several product releases. From Nvidia’s new GPUs to Apple’s iPhone 12 and the M1 Macs, products and services saw plenty of upgrades and innovation. But, given the restrictions and breaks in the global supply chain has already resulted in long delays. In fact, Google’s Nest Detect is also facing a similar delay.
Google’s Promise
Google, in October, declared that it is committed to providing software support for Nest Secure. Also, Google made a statement saying more Nest Detect sensors would arrive by the end of 2020. However, Google Store will be unable to deliver on the deadline due to a delay.
The company’s initial comments revealed that Nest Detect would be available for customers in ‘mid-December.’ Google’s announcement was quite unexpected after months of unavailability of the sensors. Google Store’s product page has been showing the ‘end of year’ deadline for the past few weeks.
Google’s Latest Announcement
Yesterday Google updated the product page with a message reading the Nest Detect sensors ‘experienced a delay.’ Instead of mid-December, now the sensors will be ‘back in stock in early 2021.’ The company has not yet specified the exact nature of the holdup nor its current production state.
What is a Nest Detect sensor?
The Nest Detect is an advanced sensor that can detect motion. It is a two-piece component designed to detect motion and when windows, doors are open or close. It holds a button that allows you to open a door without setting off an alarm. Detect also has tamper-detection sensors and tells you when it is meddled with.
The Nest Detect also has other convenient features like Pathlight that automatically lights your way in the dark.
In its October announcement, Google declared that it discontinued making and selling Nest Secure systems. However, it committed to maintaining feature parity, software fixes, and critical security updates. The Nest Detect sensors cost $49 each but were unavailable for a long period.
