Signature Products has received a financing commitment of about €800,000 from the German state of Baden-Württemberg for the development of a regional hemp protein value chain. The startup was founded in 2019, and is one of Europe’s major hemp suppliers, concentrating on the whole value chain in the field of hemp.
It provides trading of hemp raw materials such as hemp seeds, hemp protein, extracts, and cannabinoid extraction. It has already launched over 40 private label clients in Germany and is now expanding its service to Spain, France, and other EU nations.
Furthermore, its own brand BUDDY works as a market research brand in order to better understand clients and their requirements. The 20-person company includes employees both in Germany and overseas, but their primary concentration is on producing ‘Made in Germany’ items.
The concept behind Signature Products’ initiative
The concept behind the initiative, according to Florian Pichlmaier, Managing Director of Signature Products, is that the growing worldwide population, urbanization, and rising income levels are contributing to an increase in global demand for meat and animal goods.
However, present food habits are deemed unhealthy, and current production patterns are deemed unsustainable. According to Florian Pichlmaier, a global change in diet with an increase in the intake of plant foods rather than animal foods is critical to improving both human and planetary health. The project’s ultimate goal is to create novel techniques, technologies, and recipes for the manufacture of protein-rich meals such as tofu, pasta, and so on using locally produced hemp.
Various foods based on hemp protein are being developed within the framework of the project in collaboration with farmers, regional processors, representatives of the gastronomy sector, and the food retail trade-in Baden-Württemberg, and will be made available to the end consumer as regional products in the retail trade.
Signature Products is currently one of Europe’s few organically certified hemp enterprises. This implies they may not only offer organic certified items to consumers such as hemp seeds, hemp protein, and hemp tea but also produce organic CBD oils in Germany.
Climate preservation and sustainability are also important topics for them. They create a sustainable value chain and a greener future by using CO2-neutral shipping and planting trees for every product sold. They contribute to superior goods and controlled growth conditions for our raw materials with their organic certification.
Collaborations
They have significant collaborations with hemp growers in various European nations. They exclusively sell hemp types listed in the EU catalog. Either regulated cultivation or organic certification. We provide the raw material that fits your needs, whether it’s biomass, hemp seeds, hemp protein, or flowers.
As a result, the initiative helps to satisfy the high demand for high-quality, protein-based, locally produced food, boosting population self-sufficiency in Germany and generating sustainable jobs in agriculture and food production across the value chain in diverse industries.
Signature Products already works closely with the Institution of Hohenheim (Institute for Crop Sciences) and receives research funding from the university. The business, in collaboration with the University of Hohenheim, applied to the state of Baden-Württemberg for funding under the BIPL-Innovation program and has now secured a promise for a larger 6-digit sum.
The dedication of the state of Baden-Württemberg, according to Florian Pichlmaier, is the appropriate signal towards sustainable, plant-based, and regional goods, particularly the very adaptable hemp plant: “We are already looking forward to employment creation, cooperative development and research with the University of Hohenheim, and the wonderful regional consumer products that we expect to see in food shops soon.”
