Introduction:
The USB implementers forum has just announced that USB-C can deliver more than double the amount of power, up to 240W. This way a majority of portable computers will not require an ugly barrel Jack and proprietary power brick for charging. This means eventually it is able to plug the same kind of multipurpose USB-C cable and charge the laptops. Currently, we use the cable for lightweight laptops, tablets, and phones.
Initially, the USB-C power delivery specification tops out at 100 watts. And it will definitely help the industry back a bit. For instance, a Dell XPS 15 can charge over USB-C. It requires 130-watt power to charge and run in full swing simultaneously. Certain manufacturers have sold off-specification USB-C adaptors. But they don’t always come with machines. Moreover, they have a fixed nondetachable cable to prevent misuse.
About 240W power consumption:
But with 240W of power, you can theoretically charge a full-fat Alienware m17 gaming laptop with USB-C. You will need new USB C chargers and cables to benefit from the new specifications. But you should be able to differentiate between the two. “All EPR cables shall be visibly identified with EPR cable identification items,” reads part of the USB-IF’s requirements for the new specifications.
Cable will be required to support up to 5A and 50V to be compliant. There will still be exceptionally beefy laptops that demand more than 240W power. 330W power supplies still are available with certain machines. Yet there are always notebooks that require more than one power supply to function well. Gaming desktops require more power. Within 650W PSU or higher for the latest desktop graphic cards, 240 w may not be enough for Sony and Microsoft gaming consoles. Some computers are getting more efficient with years.
How OnePlus was the first to bring USB-C in the industry:
OnePlus introduced USB-C to the world around the year 2014. The OnePlus One model was launched in 2014 and it featured a USB-C dash charger. As per the company claims, the charger would charge a completely drained phone, in an hour’s time. So far, the company has not changed its charger and they are still proud of it. Being a OnePlus user, I have witnessed warp charging. The USB-C charger charges the phone in an hour’s time.
Looking at this, certain TW headphones have also started to incorporate the USB-C chargers. Since everyone wants to charge their devices quickly, they prefer devices compatible with USB-C chargers.
Apple transitions to USB-C:
In a groundbreaking move, the newly launched Mac computers feature a USB-C port. These devices have monitors that run on USB-C. It has been a very surprising decision from Apple. So many Apple fans have been astonished by the decision from the company to incorporate a USB-C port in their devices. Apple is popular to come up with its own way of working around the devices. In this case, the world sat up and took notice of the announcement where Apple said that Macbooks will have a USB-C port. In these devices, wherever there is a Thunderbolt 3 port, USB-C type cables are compatible.
Conclusion:
USB-C seems to be the future of devices that require powering up the batteries. Now, as Apple has also incorporated USB-C, it seems that other companies will also follow the trend. Also, from a user’s perspective, it is always great to have a cable that works almost everywhere. This includes computers, Bluetooth headphones, and mobile phones.
