- Drive opens Office files in editing mode on the web
- Previously double click would open a preview of the documents
- The change will make it quicker to open and edit
Google is best known for its popular search engine, email services, web browsers, and other online tools. The company keeps a complete check over its services to satisfy its users. Pick up any one of the services and then you’ll be a complete fan of it.
With this, the company is bringing another change to its Google Drive Platform. Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service. The service was launched on April 24, 2012. This single platform accounts for over 1 billion users till 2018.
The file-hosting service is one of the safest places to back up and access your files. Moreover, you can access your files from any device. You can easily invite others to view, edit, or leave comments on your files and folders.
Just turn on auto backup and forget about losing any of your images, videos, and documents. It is the ultimate companion for backup and cloud storage.
What’s new in Google Drive?
With this new change Drive will now directly open Office files in editing mode on the web. Google editing applications can now open and edit Microsoft files on Android. Now the drive directly opens them in editing mode. Previously double-clicking would open the preview of the document.
The users then choose whether to open in Office editing mode or download the file. The new behaviour will see Google directly open Office files. It includes .docx, .doc, .ppt, .pptx, .xls, .xlsx, and .xlsm. Users can preview by selecting that option in the right-click menu.
It can also be done by pressing ‘P’ while double-clicking the file. Users can directly edit, comment, and collaborate on Office files using the interface of Google Docs. This applies to Sheets, and Slides too. The changes will be automatically saved to the file in the existing Office format.
Other than this there are two exceptions to this default.
- Password-protected Office files will not open directly in Office editing mode. These will continue to open in preview mode.
- In the case of the Chrome extension the docs, sheets, and slides will redirect to the extension.
The Google Drive Office editing is rolling out now. However, it will take a few weeks to be fully implemented.
