- Microsoft acts on CAF ideals
- Principles promise an equal treatment to developers
- Unrestricted payment methods to happen on Windows Store
- Microsoft ensures data protection in its Store
Microsoft made some major changes to its app store principles. It released a 10 point list for Windows’ Microsoft Store. These principles are committing to a fair usage policy and equal opportunity to developers.
These promises are in response to the ongoing battle between tech giants and third-party developers. But Microsoft made it clear that it will not impede other business models. Also, third-party companies can use their method for transactions.
These fair usage principles are based on the ideals of the Coalition for App Fairness (CAF). The CAF envisions a level-playing field for all businesses. It also proposes freedom of choice for consumers.
New Principles adopted by Microsoft:
- Developers are free to choose their mode of distribution. They can use either the Windows Store or their own source.
- Windows will not block the developers’ business model. They are allowed to deliver their content and services as they prefer. This means they can choose either offline content or stream from a cloud.
- Developers will be timely updated with all the relevant information. Also, the Interoperability Principles will be accessible to developers at all times.
- Windows will not block any app based on its payment methods. Developers have the choice to select their mode of payment.
- The Windows Store will require developers to meet the ‘objective standards’. This includes security, privacy, content quality, and digital safety of the consumers.
- Apps promoted by Windows will be held equal to the same standards as others. This will ensure a level playing field.
- Developers will have the freedom to communicate directly with their users. The users can directly communicate from within the app. This will be done for all legitimate business purposes.
- Windows Store will not force any developer regarding in-app purchases. They will have the freedom to choose which services to sell.
- Microsoft will not promote non-public information. It will not use data within its app store to compete with the developers.
- Microsoft Store will remain transparent about its rules and policies. It will opt for a fair process to resolve disputes with proper notice.
Microsoft Speaks Against Anticompetitiveness
Recently, Epic Games had filed a lawsuit against Apple. This was because Apple removed Fortnite for implementing its own payment system. It allowed users to make in-app purchases either via App Store or directly from their website. This according to Apple violates their App Store policies.
Similar issues have sprung up with Google too. According to developers, both Apple and Google deduct a 30% cut from all the in-app purchases of digital goods. Moreover, Google is having disputes with several Indian startups over the violation of Play Store policies. According to Google, many apps have promoted Gambling by providing offers and cash-backs.
